HOW TO HAND STRAIGHTEN
YOUR ARROW SHAFTS
All
of us who do wood arrows need to know something about straightening arrow
shafts. Wood is known to move for a variety of reasons, especially raw wood.
Sitka is a very stable wood and we have less problems drying and machining
it in regards to straightness than any wood I've worked with. It likes to
stay straight. Non the less, I've gotten pretty good at straightening arrow
shafts. I'll share some things that were passed on to me by some of my
wholesale customers who have a lifetime of knowledge.
To hand straighten shafts, hold the shaft across the palm of your hand so
the curve, or bend, of the shaft is down and the shaft is held over the back
of your palm. Extend your arm and sight down the shaft and use your other
hand to pull the shaft down for bending. This gives a wider radius than
bending the shaft in your fingers. Work the bend up or down the shaft
sighting during bending. In a shaft that won't respond to this, it's time to
get the tool out to burnish the outside of the bend. A piston pin or similar
item works, but you can make a nice tool by going to the hardware store and
buying a hook, about 5/16, with a wood screw end and a file handle that will
fit the screw end of your hook. Cut the pointed end of the hook off and
smooth the end with a file, screw the hook into the handle and you have a
hook that a good many professionals use. Rest one end of the shaft on your
bench, hold the other in your hand and run the hook up and down the outside
of the bend. You'll notice the wood being burnished will take on a little
shine. I straighten several times through the fletching process, and the
spruce stays straight after finish ect. We watch for the ones that are
radical and throw them out. All our shafts are guaranteed to be straight or
straightenable.
