"Douglas Fir Was King"
"50 years ago when I was a kid, Fir was king here in the northwest... The school I attended has beautiful straight grained fir flooring, as was common. Our house had painted fir siding as did most of the homes in our neighborhood. Locally built commercial boats were often built out of fir, including ribs planking and decks. I had a friend who owned a 68" Halibut Schooner, a beautiful old boat with an aft house and high bow. The planking was 2 1/2" thick Douglass fir" (Neil Hildebrand, 2012).
Douglas Fir is the strongest of all softwoods with heavy, hard grain. This wood runs a close proximity to Oak at about 50lbs. a cubic foot. But there is another side to Fir with very fine, even grain and weights as low as 28lbs.a cubic foot (about Spruce weight). We choose the middle ground for our shafting and the lighter, very fined grain for our lower spines (low 300's in lower spines, up to 580 in the higher spines). The tensil strength of Douglass Fir exceeds that of Sitka Spruce or Port Orford Cedar and makes a tough, durable arrow that is straight or easily hand straightened.
Douglas Fir shafts (the strongest of all the Fir) in 5/16 and 11/32
Genuine old growth Douglas Fir grown on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula. The Olympic Mountains run through the Peninsula giving us a Fir grown in the high country for maximum strength and fine grain.
All our Fir is cut from hand split blocks, so the shafting follows the grain.
We have long recognized Old Growth Douglas Fir wood as producing a high quality arrow shaft with consistent properties such as strength, durability, and sturdiness. With several years of traditional archery fir shaft manufacturing, we are confident in the availability and supply of this product..
All shafts are spined in 5 pound groups and weight matched to a 10 grain span or less.
All shaft lengths are 32” or cut to your length. Add one inch for back of point (BOP) measurement for broad head and 3/4 inch for field point.
Shafts ordered are bare shafts unless custom ordered.
